§3.2Solomon’s prayer (1 Kgs 8:23 + 27)

Solomon’s prayer in 1 Kgs 8:12–61 is a long piece that generally bears the stylistic and ideological imprints of the Deuteronomistic school.437 It falls into four parts, which are embedded within a narrative framework that tells about the inauguration of the Jerusalem temple, with each part of the prayer being set at a certain point in the complex, inaugural ceremony. The third part, which is also the longest one (vv. 23–53) describes with much detail the various functions of the temple. It is introduced by an opening paragraph (vv. 23–27), which anchors the building of the temple in God’s promise to David:
